Ted's pick: 2016 Red Bordeaux Great Value Case Buy: Grand Meynau, Grand Vin
“Ted: I need more everyday Bordeaux wines…”

Gotcha!

Loud and Clear.

Tasting a lot of samples the past few weeks… an email to follow on 6 different great 2015’s…

WANT GREAT VALUE???

I found a great 2016 Bordeaux red Chateau Grand Meynau!

Most inexpensive Bordeaux’s are very forgettable…

Not the ones here at Pop’s of course – Unlike a lot of places, I taste every bottle and weigh its pricing to see if it qualifies for our loyal customers who can blindly buy and get a great wine every time.

This 2016 Chateau Meynau has a lot of fruit, deep color and STRUCTURE which is missing from a lot of other ones.

The reason is simple, this is a majority Cabernet Sauvignon based whereas most inexpensive Bordeaux’s are a majority Merlot.

The Cab makes a BIG DIFFERENCE here and makes a Much better wine.

A steal for $9+!!!!!

Grab cases while it lasts."

Ted's pick... Outstanding Value Malbec from Catena, 2017 Tilia from Mendoza
"Heard of Catena?

Unreal Value…

Owned by the Catena Family, Tilia is year-in, year-out an outstanding value Malbec!

2017 Tilia Malbec. Mendoza, Argentina

$8+ for a Catena Malbec!!

Aromas of black cherries and plums are accompanied by notes of violets and vanilla. On the palate the wine is rich and full-bodied with flavors of juicy blackberries, cranberries, and black currants abound, followed by notes of vanilla and sweet spice.

Pair this Malbec with a meat dish that mirrors its tangy berry flavors like cranberry pot roast or roast duck with sour cherry sauce.

Tilia has been handcrafted to demonstrate true varietal character. The brand is named after the Tilia (Linden) tree commonly found throughout Argentina’s wine country.

Approachable, affordable and filled with layers of flavor.

Tilia wines are aged in French and American oak, as well as stainless steel, and are allowed some time in bottle prior to release.

They are produced in an approachable style using sustainably farmed grapes.

This is a great price for what's in the bottle.

Ted's pick... 94 Rated 2015 Spanish Red Blend $14+ "Herencia Altes L'Estel Spanish Red Blend from Terra Alta Overdelivers!

Spain continues to Overdeliver!

Here's a fantastic new discovery at a very fair price.

2015 Herencia Altes "L'Estel" Terra Alta, Spain

Herencia Altes is a new discovery in Terra Alta Spain making dense dark reds.

This is their best value!

The 2015 L’Estel is a dense rich red is a blend of Garnacha, Syrah and old Cariñena from a selection of their best vineyards from a warm and healthy vintage.

The color is intense and lively with a core of garnet with a bright ruby rim. Stony minerality overlay black fruits and spice on the nose. On the palate, the wine is full bodied with luscious sweet fruit and soft tannins. Fresh berry fruit and toasty notes enrich the structure and natural complexity of the old vines. A full and round sensation, to be enjoyed with grilled meat of all sorts.

While Terra Alta is not yet a well-known region - tucked away in the south eastern corner of Catalonia it borders Aragon and Valencia - it is one of the largest areas in Catalunya under vine with plenty of old Garnatxa bush vines.

I think it is amongst the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity.

Nuria Altés, like many other young vintners in Spain, comes from a family who has grown grapes for generations."

94 Points - James Suckling
"A polished and very resolved wine in a flavorsome dark berry fruited guise with gently leafy and savory elements. The palate has deeply ripe and velvety tannins carrying spiced dried cherry flavor. Best from 2020." (James Suckling, July 2017)

Ted's pick... 2015 Rufina Chianti Selvapiana has arrived 90 points Wine Spectator $15+ "Sensuous & Pure!"
"Rufina is where the most sensuous Chianti are produced.

On the drive South from Ravenna through the mountains to Florence on mostly hair-pin turns for 90 minutes one arrives in Rufina, a quiet town in Italy.

This town is a welcome discovery.

A bowl of fresh pasta, pommodoro tomato sauce and a glass of “local” red wine is mandatory.

The HOUSE wine happens to be from one of the oldest & classic estates in Rufina.

Fattoria Selvapiana.

Sell-Va-Pii-Anna. Selvapiana is a classic Tuscan fattoria located in the Chianti Rufina originally a summer residence for the Florentine bishops and later to a series of Florentine merchant families and purchased in 1827 by Michele Giuntini Selvapiana.

The 2015 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina just arrived and is a GREAT VINTAGE not to be missed!

Elegant and fragrant, this Chianti opens with aromas of pressed rose, crushed violet, wild berry and a whiff of baking spice. The vibrant, focused palate delivers juicy red cherry, raspberry, white pepper, cinnamon and dried herb.

Very well balanced, with supple tannins and bright acidity. 95% Sangiovese and 5% a blend of Canaiolo, Colorina, and Malvasia Nera.

Rufina's soil of galestro mixed with limestone and clay combined with its proximity to the Apennines provide a special microclimate for late ripening fruit with high acidity.

Selvapiana's reputation is based on producing red wines from the terroir of this unique location."

90 points - Wine Spectator
"Pure cherry aromas and flavors are enhanced by a smoky element in this juicy, round red. Hints of earth and mineral add interest on the finish. Drink now through 2023." 7,000 cases imported.-B.S..July/2017

Great wine to grab a case and drink in 3-5 years as it’s elegance gets better and better with time.

Ted's pick... 2015 Red Burg: Santenay 1er Cru Les Graviers by Domaine Jessiaume is a stunner!
"Red Burgundy on my mind thanks to the Wine Spectator Advance in my email box yesterday.

2015 Burgundy - great vintage, greater wines...

Finally Burgundy getting some positive press.

The problem...

They are SO EXPENSIVE!

$59, $85, $119, $149 a bottle...

Burgundy has always been the finest expression of noble Pinot Noir, but prices make it very challenging.

My advice for quality and value is to look to the southern Côte d'Or and to unassuming Santenay to discover silky, berry-rich gems like this.

2015 Domaine Jessiaume Santenay 1er Cru "Gravieres"

A lot of Santenay's are usually too light and simple, but this PREMIER CRU from 2015 has a lot of body, charm, wonderful fruit with spiciness and a very harmonious personality that drinks really well right now and will likely improve over 5 years.

The red wine from this vineyard (which also produces a white) is firm with layers of ripe red fruits. It will benefit with some age to lose that spicy flavor that currently dominates the wine. But that's what I enjoy about it right now.

The world's best-selling wine writer Hugh Johnson says the finest Santenay wines "are in the same class as Chassagne-Montrachet." Yet thankfully this little enclave remains superb value. Domaine Jessiaume has been Hugh's 'secret Santenay' for 20 years; ultra reliable and utterly charming. It was built in 1850 and is still operated and managed by the fifth generation of the family, brothers Marc and Pascal.

At $30+, this is the best-value ready-to-drink Premier Cru Burgundy there is!

Deserves classic cuisine such as coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon.

Only a few cases available…

Ted's pick... 11 year Old Barolo 95WA Elio Altare "Cerretta" Vineyard Perfect for Easter Sunday
"Going to Italy Thursday night. A little Vaykay, a few visits in Barolo country next week followed by my Annual visit to Bordeaux (Taste the 2017’s) and a few days eating in and around Lyon, France… with a visit at Jaboulet in Hermitage.

Any restaurant recommendations? Please forward… Especially in Lyon.

Always enjoy visiting Elio Altare in La Morra and will again next Thursday.

The estate, now fully operating under his daughter Silvia, had a challenging 2014 season for Barolo's. We’ll taste the 2015’s out of barrel and this wine below…

Here's a Mature Gem that's perfect for Easter Sunday...

2007 vintage...

11 years old and entering an awesome drinking zone.

2007 Elio Altare Barolo Cerretta Vineyard

The Cerretta is the newest addition to Elio Altare's lineup and was first produced in 2005. Located in Serralunga, the vineyard plays host to some of Barolo's greatest names, including Giacomo Conterno.

Intense ruby red, with garnet reflections, this wine has sexy aromas of mature red fruits, spice, tobacco and licorice.

On the palate, it is warm and elegant, with full bodied tannins starting to soften with minty and spicy notes.

Pair this with red meats and aged cheese.

Mr. Parker loves it too...

95 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"With the 2007 Barolo Cerretta Altare demonstrates the elegance that can be coaxed from this site in Serralunga. The Cerretta is the only Barolo Altare makes from vineyards outside his hometown of La Morra, but the house style nevertheless comes through in spades. Dark fruit, tar, licorice, smoke and scorched earth are some of the nuances that flow from this muscular, virile Barolo." Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

Grab a 6-pack while it lasts… Extremely LIMITED!!!
