"Offers baked cherry pie, with rhubarb and blueberry, showing a wonderful
fruit profile that's spicy, elegant and easy to drink. Great balance. Drink

"You rarely find the words "excellent" and "inexpensive" in the same
sentence as Pinot Noir. But yesterday I found that rarest of rarities—an $8
Pinot Noir that is an amazing buy, with a very good rating. It’s the 2008
RedTree California Pinot and in my blind tasting I was wowed by this wine’s
elegance, balance and complex mix of baked cherry pie, rhubarb and blueberry
flavors…this one is yummy Pinot Noir and easy to drink.

"GEORGES is a red wine from the South of France, a delicious
selection of really old vine Carignan, Grenache and Syrah from the Cotes de
Roussillon that I found a few vintages ago. GEORGES struck me for it's sheer
value and quaff-ability and it drank quite well for the money in 2005.
In 2007 it SCREAMS VALUE... 91 Points RP and $10+ when bought by the case!
Lover's of full bodied, sexy, round reds that won't break the bank will
rejoice at this wine's jammy, spicy character and long floral finish. This
is a wine of subtle complexity and finesse, with pure, minerality, and the
wine shows a dark purple color with a rich nose of Languedoc fruit. Scents
of licorice, blackberry and spice hit the nose while the palate is strong
with cherries and chocolate, and the essence of dark fruits. It has the
refreshing acidity typical of the whole range from Puig, but with greater
depth of fruit flavor and tremendous elegance."
Ted Clark, Pop's Wines & Spirits, October, 2009
"The Puig-Parahy 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Georges - a cuvee of Carignan
and Grenache with a bit of Syrah, raised in tank (from which I tasted it) -
smells of blackberry, wood smoke, toasted walnut, rosemary, and marjoram;
offers a brightly-fruited, slightly tart and grainy palate impression, and
finishes with a pungency of herb and fruit skin, a vigorous brightness,
chalk and stone minerality, and sheer grip (accompanied by a faint 'chew')
that can scarcely be expected from a wine destined to sell for so little.
This whistle-clean beauty should remain virtually inert in tank, so that
when Puig finally gets around to bottling and selling it, you will be able
to count on at least a couple of years of very satisfying and versatile
performance at table - not to mention amazing value."

"The decadently sweet, single vintage 2004 Pedro Ximenez de Anada
reveals off-the-chart honeyed richness along with hints of caramel and
marmalade. This dark amber-colored wine possesses plenty of fresh fruit
characteristics. It is best served as dessert. Importer Jorge Ordonez has
begun to offer single vintage finos, aged two years in traditional American
oak botas (500 liters), so consumers have an opportunity to understand how
zesty a fino can be." ($30-$50)

The
nodding head test........
If you look around the room at our weekly wine tastings and you
see a bunch of heads nodding It always means you've gotta take a wine very
seriously! You could read the review below and see a price tag of $15-$20
and I know I'd be tempted to buy it. I can't impress upon you enough how
amazing a value this is!
"The 2008 Venta Morales is a phenomenal value. Sourced from a 32-year-old
vineyard with tiny yields of two tons per acre, the wine was fermented and
raised in stainless steel. It reveals a remarkably deep color for its humble
price, fragrant black cherry aromas, ripe, round, savory fruit on the
palate, and excellent depth and length. It over-delivers in a very big way."

A
major sleeper......
It's not often that you see a wine distributor owner heading out
to California to create his own cuvee. The 2006 was a huge success here at
Pop's, so much so that we never had enough to offer it. The 2007 just
arrived (great year in California) and it will be a sell-out! I gotta tell
you there aren't many wine portfolios out there that have such an emphasis
on quality as the Douglas Polaner Portfolio. Don't miss this!
"Simply put, Bravo to Doug Polaner and his friends... We're still not
allowed to know who the friends are, but Doug and friends made some pretty
kick ass wine in 2007 and the result is the best Hardin Cabernet Sauvignon
I've ever tasted. It's even better than that first cuvee that was created
and blew the market out of the water. And Bravo to Doug for keeping the
price the same as it's always been. Not only an unbelievable bottle of Napa
Cabernet, but a price which simply makes this a Certified No Brainer for
right now."

"I’ve never tasted anything from this producer before, but was
floored in a single week by two wines, this dynamite Falanghina and an
amazing Taurasi. This white shows terrific fruit recalling white peaches and
mandarin oranges, along with subtle floral and mineral notes. There’s lots
of acidity interlaced with the fruit, and the integration of the two is so
effective that the wine seems almost to crackle with freshness. If you want
to find a more interesting and complete white for $18, all I can do is wish
you luck."
