...BenRiach The Original Ten – Overall
Aroma is a tad waxy, not Clyenlish level, and has a nice earthy-malty character that sits alongside a warm fruitiness that comes through like a gourmet fruit candy; Palate is rather basic but is good and fruity with a strong malty presence that’s super easy to sip and enjoy; Finish is warm, soft and fruity.
This is a decent whisky. It’s not crazy deep or explosive, but it is warm, tasty and easy to mix with.
BENRIACH THE ORIGINAL TEN – FINAL THOUGHTS AND SCORE
It’s a basic malt, and I definitely want more out of it, but for being an entry-level malt at 43% it’s nice. Nothing off or unpleasant about it, just light and soft – which isn’t a bad thing at all. We need these on the shelves and in our lineups.
BenRiach The Original Ten is a great intro to BenRiach, Speyside and Single Malt Scotch in general and I’d happily recommend it to new Scotch drinkers as a way to get to know the basic profile of Scotch whisky. It’s a tasty easy drinker and the perfect gateway into the rest of what Scotland has to offer.
SCORE: 3/5
To make Benriach Twelve, Benriach spirit is three cask matured for at least twelve years in sherry casks, bourbon barrels and port casks. The whisky from each cask is then expertly married together to create a smooth, sherry-rich single malt, layered with baked fruit, maple honey and cocoa, perfectly balanced with a lingering sultana and spiced mocha finish.
TOP 100 SPIRITS 2021
What's in the bottle is a 12-year-old single malt aged in a combination of Sherry, bourbon and Port barrels. Expect a tawny hue and almond and fresh red apple aromas. The palate opens brisk and bold, showing caramel and baked apple flavors. A splash of water brings out mocha tones alongside cinnamon and ginger. Overall, this is a lightly sweet sipper, warming and delicious. Kara Newman, 12/31/2021.
This is a new recipe, replacing the old 12 year old. Rounded and warming on the nose, with stewed fruits, orange peel, and a hint of lime. Voluptuous in the mouth, with honey, milky coffee, figs, and dried fruit. Black currants, licorice, and lively spices in the finish. A really satisfying, well-structured dram. Gavin Smith, Winter 2020.
