Hibiki 21 was named World's Best Blended Whisky at the 2013 World Whiskies Awards and was awarded 96 points in Jim Murray's 2014 Whisky Bible.
Hibiki 21 features a range of Suntory’s most famous distilleries. The majority of this whisky is sourced from the Chita Distillery in Aichi. Being mostly corn-based and column distilled, this grain portion adds lightness, soft texture, and fruit to the blend. The Hakushu malt portion of this blend is more savoryn with mildly peaty flavors. This contrasts the Yamazaki malt portion with its deeper fruit, minerality, and some backbone. This blend of both malt and grain whiskies, together with the diverse blend of cask types used for aging, results in a complex tasting tour de force. The higher-end Hibiki whiskies see a lot of time in rare Japanese Mizunara casks and are one reason for their elegance and unique perfume.
This blended whisky is an ideal sipper, with an enticing crème brûlèe and dried apricot scents. Those notes are echoed on the palate, but are layered with drier oak and cigar wrapper notes, woven together on a light layer of peat smoke. Soft, complex and well-balanced. Kara Newman, 3/1/2016.
