Less than 3% of all certified mezcal produced in 2019 was made with ‘ancho’ (agave cupreata). It is a mezcal known by its sweetness and complexity. The mezcal of choice in Guerrero and Michoacán.
About Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Ancho Guerrero
Mezcal de Leyendas is focused on bringing artisanal mezcals using rare and unique agaves from different regions within Mexico. Instead of focusing on one particular type, their aim is to use the most prevalent agaves from each region allowing them to guide the consumer across the entire DO of mezcal. These are sourced from diverse regions, highlighting the local terroir as well as showcasing the skills of local Maestros Mezcaleros. Each region ― be it Durango, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, or San Luis Potosi ― features one master producer of mezcal.
Mezcal is a distillate produced with a plant called Agave. There are many species of Agave, ~ 200 species, of which ~ 30 are used to produce mezcal. Yet, only 12 species account for ~ 99% of certified mezcal*.
