Golden amber color. Aromas of caramel-drizzled cherries, coconut flakes, hazelnut creme wafers, honey-lemon tea, Spanish peanut, and lime zest with a satiny, vibrant, dryish light-to-medium body and a smooth, complex, medium-long peanut oil, ground ginger, and vanilla bean finish. A well-balanced, lengthy Bourbon that’s chic and stylish without being flashy.
Before glass bottles became the standard for selling spirits whisky was sold out of barrels or tubs. In 1880, the Beam family began marketing their bottled whisky as ‘Old Tub’ in tribute to the old ways. It wasn’t until 10 years after prohibition, in 1943, that James B. Beam changed the name of Old Tub to Jim Beam. To this day Jim Beam is the number one selling bourbon.

Old Tub Bottled In Bond Bourbon is essentially a non chill-filtered version of the regular Jim Beam White bottled at 50% ABV. On the surface, the words don’t sound like a lot, but in the glass those extra 10 points in ABV and leaving the oils intact make a world of difference....
Mash Bill: 75% Corn, 13% Rye, 12% Malted Barley
Old Tub Bottled In Bond Bourbon – Overall
Aroma is lively and full of interesting darkly sweet and spicy notes that transcend the regular white in leaps and bounds; Palate strolls the same path but picks up some extra oakiness and a pronounced oily peanut brittle note that fits perfectly amongst the spice and baked sweets; Finish is as pleasant as can be and ends with this warm apple pie note that feels homey and inviting.
Simply put, this is good and further proof that Jim Beam is at its best when bottled at 50%+ and NCF.

Tasting Notes: Old Tub Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Vital Stats: Bottled in Bond, 100 proof, minimum four years old. Un-filtered (only screened to remove wood particles).
Appearance: Golden sunflower. Bottle has a nice vintage look.
Nose: Smells oddly similar to a fermenting vat – sweet corn and sour mash. Caramel, hay, vanilla and spice. Straight forward, but balanced and very aromatic.
Palate: A bit of chalk and slight heat which dissipates quickly and leads to green anise and light butterscotch. Clove, tobacco, vanilla and an appropriate amount of that sour mash flavor that reminds you where it comes from. There’s oak, honey and grain all balanced together. Medium to long finish.
Summary:
Old Tub is perfect. It is indicative for what Bottled in Bond should be. It sets a baseline for all others to go forward from. I don't always factor price into the final rating heavily, but to have this available for less than $22 is exceptional.
It hits all the marks - balanced, cost efficient, high proof, sippable and good in cocktails. This would be my well whiskey in a cocktail bar hands down. I appreciate the story, the packaging and the final product. I would regularly keep this bottle in my home bar for a base level, high quality bourbon.
“We’re taking bourbon lovers back in time and making a delicious bourbon true to the way my ancestors intended over 140 years ago, when Old Tub was first crafted,” says Fred Noe, seventh generation master distiller. “I’m excited to share this one-of-a-kind liquid with our fans and provide a bit of authenticity and nostalgia as we head towards another 225 years in the bourbon industry.”
This is more about mashbill than barrel, a fine showcase of grain. Light and sweet on the nose, with peanuts, nougat, creamed corn, banana pudding, coconut cake, and Popsicle stick; water brings out fresh apple. It stays consistent on the palate, showcasing the purity and sweetness of the grain: cream, vanilla taffy, toasted coconut, and toasted wood. It finishes with peanuts, toasted coconut, clean grain, and oak. Susannah Skiver Barton, Fall 2020.
