Sauvignon Blanc from Burgundy?.
The appellation of Saint-Bris in Northern Burgundy is the only appellation in Burgundy allowed to grow Sauvignon Blanc. That makes Saint-Bris something of an oddity for Burgundy in that it is made only from Sauvignon blanc and Sauvignon gris, rather than the Chardonnay of Chablis and the notable white Burgundies, or the Aligoté of many simpler, easy-drinking whites of the region.
Saint-Bris is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for white wine in the Burgundy wine region of France. This AOC is located around the village Saint-Bris-le-Vineux in the Yonne department, a few kilometers southwest of the Chablis AOC area, and southeast of the city of Auxerre. There are approximately 100 hectares (250 acres) of vineyard in the appellation whichare situated in the communes Chitry, Irancy, Quenne, Saint-Bris-le-Vineux and Vincelottes.
"The cooperative of Bailly-Lapierre with 430 growers is best known for its Crémant de Bourgogne, but it also makes a lovely St-Bris. The 2018 took a silver medal at the 29th Concours des Vins du Grand Auxerrois. Exhibiting delicate nuances of white flowers, its allure is immediate, and it dazzles with its bright stony impact. Wonderful acidity, especially given the vintage, makes it a pleasure to drink now – particularly with sushi." Decanter Magazine, Off-piste Burgundy: Value alternatives, Michael Apstein, June 3, 2020.
This wine has a pale gold color. The nose offers a blend of white fruits with a hint of fresh herbs. After a few minutes of aeration, the aromatic palette changes to a floral and fruity style with a hint of citrus and blackcurrant flowers. In the mouth, it is fresh with a delicate touch of minerality with the richness of white fruits. It is both floral and fruity in the end. This is a Sauvignon Blanc for those who find most New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs to fruity, but are looking for something similar.
Food pairings for this wine are Oysters, Clams, Fish, Shellfish. Suggested cheese pairings: Feta, Chevre, Brie, Gruyere, Havarti, Mozzarella, Ricotta.
