A blend of about 92% Sangiovese and 8% Merlot.
Made predominantly from Sangiovese grapes, quality-selected in Farnetella, in the commune of Sinalunga, southeast of Siena and northwest of Montepulciano. The vineyards are almost all southwest-facing, sited on a well – exposed and – ventilated bench, at elevations of between 220 and 560 metres. The soils are layered sand and silt, with some presence of clay, and larger percentages of rock and limestone.
The vineyards at Farnetella are all hand harvested and are farmed with the same attention and precision as those at Felsina. Organic, sustainable agriculture is practiced and they have incorporated some of the principals of biodynamics as well. Similar to Felsina, the entire production is made from estate fruit.
In 1981 the owners of Felsina purchased the historic estate of Castello di Farnetella. Located about 30 minutes southeast of Castelnuovo Berardenga, this property should be considered a monopole cru among the otherwise uninspired appellation of Chianti Colli Senesi. The property and village of Farnetella encompasses a large hill, the top of which is near 560 meters in elevation. It has a mix of soils on it including sand, clay and limestone. While Farnetella is well-suited to Sangiovese, which makes up a majority of its plantings, there are also plots of Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
A hint of sweet wood smoke graces the strawberry, cherry and earth flavors in this gentle red. It firms up on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 13,333 cases made, 8,000 cases imported. Bruce Sanderson, 10/31/2021.
