Castello di Volpaia Description

90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot aged 12 months in large casks.

Certified organic

The hilltop village of Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the Florence-Siena border with the first documents mentioning Volpaia dating back to 1172. The villages medieval layout and buildings are still intact and part of the original outside walls and two of its six towers are still standing, making Volpaia one of the best-preserved walled villages of its period.

Nine centuries after Volpaia was built, Raffaello Stianti purchased a portion of the estate in 1966 and when his  his daughter, Giovannella, married Carlo Mascheroni in 1972 he presented them with the estate as a wedding gift. Today, the couple is joined by their two children, Nicolo and Federica, and the family is considered one of Italy's leaders in organic viticulture and farming.

From: Chianti Classico: The Brilliant 2021s & Variable 2020s (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico is an absolute joy. Fragrant, silky and super-expressive, the 2021 captures all the finesse of Radda. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, orange peel and mint are all beautifully delineated in a vibrant, mid-weight Chianti Classico that has so much to offer. This is a fine showing. Drinking Window

Rank #5 - Top 10 Values of 2023

A racy version, this boasts black cherry, blueberry, violet and iron flavors. Features a firm line of tannins that work in concert with the acidity, while flashes of Mediterranean scrub peek through. Mouthwatering finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Drink now through 2032. 15,000 cases made, 14,000 cases imported. Bruce Sanderson, 10/31/2023.

Wine Enthusiast: 91 Points

On the nose, dark chocolate links sweet cherry and vanilla to savory tomato leaf and earth. The streaks of cherry, chocolate and vanilla continue on the palate, with strawberries highlighting their sweetness, but well-timed tannins and acid boost the enduring, vegetal tomato note to maintain balance. Danielle Callegari, 12/31/2023.
