Charles Heidsieck Description

To the eye: A beautiful, pale golden hue, with very fine yet vivacious bubbles. To the nose: First, the impression of pastry shop. Then come the floral notes: Lime-tree in full bloom, violets, lilac, all of which seem to resonate with the blueberry notes and those, even more concentrated, of soft dried apricots. To the mouth: The first impression is silky smooth. Then it starts to melt like ripe fleshy apricots, gorgeous melon and enticing rum pastries. Add the slightly spicy notes of Muscat grape. On the whole, a perfect sense of balance, half-way between freshness and full bloom.

Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points

A big boy with almost fleshy fruit. The flavors push into exotic, tropical richness yet retain spicy citrus-rind highlights. There is nothing clumsy, despite the ripeness; the finish seems to extend almost infinitely and keeps zinging you with surprises-marshmallow, marzipan, cookie dough, etc.

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

An extra touch of aging before disgorgement has given this Champagne a fine balance. Hints of toast as well as tight acidity have come from the equal blend of the three main grapes. The fruitiness is still very present, offering crisp citrus to balance the edge of maturity. 12/2020.

Decanter: 91 Points

Contrasts creamy texture with zesty acidity and ripe fruit, feeling lively and vibrant overall. Accomplished and seductive in equal measure. , 9/2019.

Burghound: 91 Points

This is a prime example of what I call a classic, and completely admirable, "Big House" NV Brut. The nose is yeasty but not too, there is freshness yet a trace of age, there is complexity yet there is still some primary fruit and the round but still vibrant offer excellent depth and fine length plus, and this is the most important part, real finishing character. A more than respectable example that is a really lovely effort in every respect and while it could be aged to moderate benefit, I probably wouldn't do so beyond 3 years or so.

Wine Advocate: 92+ Points

Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of Charles Heidsieck's NV Brut Réserve was disgorged earlier this year. It's showing very well, opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions, displaying good concentration and underlying richness. This is a bottling that continues to punch above its weight and which both merits and rewards a few years in the cellar before opening. William Kelley, 11/2019.
