Ten to fifteen years ago, you would see an occasional Vin de Savoie on store shelves. There was just no interest or demand for France's Alpine wine. Nowadays, the Savoie region of eastern France (located about 50 miles each way from Italy and Switzerland) is recognized not only for stony white wines, but also distinct reds made with Mondeuse, as well as world-class AOC Vermouth de Chambery. Savoie is a collection of more than a dozen Cru villages. Chignin is a tiny village that sits beneath the mountain Sommet de Montgelas at 1000 ft above sea level. This is where Domaine Gonnet cultivates 32 acres of Mondeuse, Altesse, and Jacquere at attractive prices. Charles' Chignin is 100% Jacquere from 40-year-old vines, that's hand-harvested, pressed immediately, and fermented in tank. Aged 6 months on the lees.
This wine is medium-bodied, dry. "Very pure, showing a melon rind edge to the green almond and light pear notes, with a refreshing finish." Pair it with fish, chicken, and any dish featuring cheese.
