The more you learn about the Guigal family, the more astounding becomes their story.  Their wines are the benchmarks for every Rhone appellation, and over the last thirty years they have become arguably one of the most lauded producer in the world.

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis. Today his grandson Philippe is the Estate’s winemaker. In the mid ‘80s they purchase of the Vidal-Fleury Establishment. In 1995 the estate acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, followed in 2001 with the purchase of both the Jean-Louis Grippat Estate and the Vallouit Estate with holdings in Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. And finally the Guigal family acquired the Domaine de Bonserine in 2006.

The Guigals select and blend cuvées from over 40 top growers, and their talent lies in the rigorous and exhaustive traveling and tasting they carry out. Ultimately they select only 1% of all wines they taste for their Côtes du Rhône: one lot out of every one hundred. Since the 1998 vintage the wine has been based on Syrah, a Northern Rhône approach to a wine that is almost always Grenache-based. This focus produces wines of greater aromatic intensity and structure.

The blend for the 2016 vintage is 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre.

E. Guigal Description

The Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge offers tremendous warmth, spice and pleasure, but in a decidedly individual fashion. It is, unlike virtually every other Côtes du Rhône, based on Syrah, a Northern Rhône approach that lends greater aromatic intensity and structure, though is far more difficult and costly to produce in the Southern Rhône. The aging also goes far other wine in the appellation in its category, a minimum of two years in a combination of stainless steel and foudres, with a deliberate blending over the course of that time that results in a wine of remarkable harmony and complexity. It is an extraordinary value and a benchmark for the region from one of the world’s most lauded producers.

Deep and dark red. On the nose intensely aromatic, with black fruits and spices. The palate is full, round and sexy. Round and smooth tannins present through the full bodied, ample wine. Overall a complete wine, with a long finish, with elegance and finesse accompanying the abundance of fruit and well-balanced tannins.

Decanter: 90 Points

Modern, lifted […] attractive and evocative. Black cherry inkiness segues into a dense palate where all the fruit is crammed into a structured body with drying tannins. Herbs and stones hemmed in by a firm grip. A good all rounder. 12/2023.

Wine Spectator: 89 Points

Medium-bodied and smoky, with wild cherry and raspberry layered with powdered graphite and charred mesquite. Reveals red tea and savory herb details through the snappy finish. Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Drink now. 40,000 cases made, 10,000 cases imported. Kristen Bieler, 12/15/2023.
