The more you learn about the Guigal family, the more astounding becomes their story. Their wines are the benchmarks for every Rhone appellation, and over the last thirty years they have become arguably one of the most lauded producer in the world.
The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis. Today his grandson Philippe is the Estate’s winemaker. In the mid ‘80s they purchase of the Vidal-Fleury Establishment. In 1995 the estate acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, followed in 2001 with the purchase of both the Jean-Louis Grippat Estate and the Vallouit Estate with holdings in Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. And finally the Guigal family acquired the Domaine de Bonserine in 2006.
The Guigals select and blend cuvées from over 40 top growers, and their talent lies in the rigorous and exhaustive traveling and tasting they carry out. Ultimately they select only 1% of all wines they taste for their Côtes du Rhône: one lot out of every one hundred. Since the 1998 vintage the wine has been based on Syrah, a Northern Rhône approach to a wine that is almost always Grenache-based. This focus produces wines of greater aromatic intensity and structure.
The blend for the Cotes du Rhone red is approximately 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre.
A juicy, fruity red with aromas of dark cherries, red berries and mild spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Bright fruit character on the palate with a playful finish and a touch of spices. Drink now.
Ripe and winey for the vintage, with alluring notes of licorice and steeped cherry on a bedrock of solid crushed iron. Apple wood and incense smoke elements add detail. Cool stone minerality washes through, while a kick of white pepper brings refreshment to the very solid finish.
