Guigal’s Côtes du Rhône Blanc both sets and steps outside the standard for the appellation and showcases one of the great secrets of the Guigal family: their specialization in the great white Rhône varieties. While only 8% of the Rhône’s production is white, a full 25% of Guigal’s production is white and they are today the single largest producer of whites in the Rhône Valley. Their Côtes du Rhône Blanc is distinct in that most other blance from this region are dominated by Southern Rhône grapes, namely Grenache Blanc. Since 1991 the Guigals have searched for and worked with growers to encourage plantings of Viognier for their Côtes du Rhône Blanc, as they have a love story with this grape that was nearly extinct in the middle of the last century. They believe the Viognier adds critical freshness and aromatics to the other varieties.
This vintage is a blend of 60% Viognier, 15% Roussanne, 10% Marsanne, 8 % Clairette, 5% Bourboulenc, 2% Grenache blanc.
In three generations Guigal wines have become the benchmarks for every Rhone appellation, and over the last thirty years they have become arguably the most lauded producer in the world.
Guigal is a unique negociant company. The family knows the Northern Rhône like no one else, and supplements their holdings of only 370 acres by buying grapes from long-time grower partners. In total, they vinify around 33% of Côte-Rôtie and 45% of Condrieu, and have access to top fruit in all the regions they work.
In the Southern Rhône, they buy only wine, and with a distinctive approach. Namely, they do not have a single contract. The Guigals select and blend cuvées from over 40 top growers, and their talent lies in the rigorous and exhaustive traveling and tasting they carry out. Ultimately they select only 1% of all wines they taste for their Côtes du Rhône: one lot out of every one hundred.
