This is for the 2018 vintage, but this column describes the 2021 vintage completely:
The New York Times - 20 Wines Under $20: Postcards From Around the World. By Eric Asimov, Published Jan. 28, 2021
Catarratto is perhaps the most widely planted white grape on Sicily, but it does not have a great reputation. It was widely used in Marsala, a sweet fortified wine, along with a lot of cheap whites. But what if it was grown conscientiously and made with care? Would it have unimagined potential? I wouldn’t call this wine a revelation. But Feudo Montoni farms organically in central Sicily and makes a handful of excellent wines, and I’d say this is a fine rendition: dry, lively and profoundly herbal. It would be a great match for delicate fish and shellfish. (Wilson Daniels, Napa, Calif.)
Masso is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in the rocky-sandy stone with high components of iron. This strong mineral structure confers to the wine a particular sapidity and freshness.
Feudo Montoni has been producing top-quality wines on its historic grounds since 1469, and is currently overseen by Fabio Sireci, the third generation of a family dedicated to producing the most refined expressions of this long-cultivated terroir...
Today, the certified organic winery produces many of Italy’s most celebrated 100% indigenous varietals—Perricone, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia and Passito—in addition to the purest expression of Nero d’Avola.
Sireci is particularly proud of the organic farming methods, artisanal cellar practices and renewable energy sources he’s implemented and maintained, which he says preserves the grapes’ natural flavors and nuances. “We keep the vines rustic, so the foliage is free to express itself,” he says. “The vineyards are not fertilized—we condition the land by sowing broad beans and peas, and we do not use any chemical products.
A lithe and balanced, light- to medium-bodied white, framing ripe Asian pear and nectarine fruit flavors with lightly mouthwatering acidity and hints of elderflower, mineral and honeycomb. Drink now. 2,900 cases made, 200 cases imported. Alison Napjus, 11/15/2022.
Lemons, honey roasted nuts, stones and bike tire appear on the nose, with a whisper of spicy heat that is confirmed on the palate, where more lemons, and now also limes, grapefruit, white peach and nectarine emerge. A dose of acid sneaks up and provides the energy for a lingering finish. Danielle Callegari, 5/1/2023.
