2019 Thierry Richoux, Irancy
Hmm – not a full-power nose but an open one that’s airy and super-inviting. A little CO2 on the tip of the tongue. Freshness, indeed a fine clarity of fruit flavour, that slowly fades with style in the finish. Another very good wine.

Gabin Et Felix Richaoux Description

"Thierry Richoux -- and now his sons Felix and Gabin-- prove that Irancy's wines can be a revelation. Pioneers of organic farming, they realize the appellations potential, limiting their yields, harvesting by hand and maturing their wines for two years. Irancy's amphitheater of hills naturally produce rather powerful, virile wines." Wine Advocate

"These are standout wines of Irancy, and to be honest, there is a gap between Richoux and the rest. These wines tend to be quite intense in style, their extended eleveage lending them real structure and longevity." Neal Martin, Vinous.

The Richoux family have been growing grapes and producing wine in the picturesque village of Irancy since 1610. Over the years, the family have accumulated a fairly sizable patchwork of vineyards in various sectors of the appellation, 20 hectares in total. Now in their 11th generation of producing wine, the Richoux family are true masters when it comes to vineyard work, so much so that, along with their own estate vineyards, they also farm the Irancy vines for Vincent Dauvissat. The Richoux's are also one of the only producers in the appellation who farm organically and biodynamically, a true challenge in this northerly and often inhospitable growing climate. They received their official Biodynamic certification as of the 2021 vintage.

The Richoux family are driven by an unwavering commitment to always respect both the unique terroir of Irancy as well as the particular qualities of each vintage. Their finest and best-exposed parcels are used to make the Irancy Rouge. In top years, he also makes two single-vineyard Irancy: one from the gradually sloping and clay centric "Cailles" vineyard, and the second from a vineyard called “Vaupessiot” with older vines and a full south-facing exposition overlooking the Yonne River.

His reputation as a devoted and gifted vigneron is articulated by the fact that he farms all of Dauvissat’s Irancy vines.

Long élévage is common practice as Richoux believes it helps to harmonize the wines while maintaining the purity and transparency of this unique terroir. The regular Irancy and the single vineyard wines all spend their first year in tank, and then a full second year in large foudres.
The wines are certainly ‘northerly’ in spirit, leading with minerals and earth and followed by fruit and spice. The are lovely and fresh, but with the structure to age gracefully.

Vinous: 92 Points

The 2019 Irancy conveys a sense of joy on the nose, where vivid red cherries intermix with raspberry preserve, rose petal and light blueberry scents. The oak is very well assimilated. The palate is silky-smooth, almost satiny in texture, framing the crisp red berries, brown spices and black truffle aromas. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a competent and very delicious Irancy that should give 10 years of drinking pleasure. Neal Martin.

Wine Advocate: 92 Points

Just bottled, Richoux's 2019 Irancy is brilliant, bursting with aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with rose petals, spices and sweet loamy soil. Medium-bodied, supple and seamless, its melting structuring tannins are entirely concealed in an ample core of succulent, perfumed fruit. William Kelley.

As I wrote last year, Thierry Richoux's Irancy's are nothing short of a revelation. While one might assume that this northerly appellation would be the source of tangy, light-bodied wines, the amphitheater of hills that surrounds this charming medieval village are in fact capable of producing a decidedly virile, characterful style of Pinot Noir. Indeed, in sunny vintages such as 2015 and 2003, Irancy can be decidedly rich and gourmand. Richoux realize's the region's potential, limiting his yields, harvesting by hand and raising his wines for two years: the first year in foudre and tank, the second in smaller oak barrels. This fastidious approach combined with several unusually concentrated vintages means that there is a wealth of superb wine waiting in the wings at this excellent address, because Richoux believes in aging his Irancy for several years before selling it. This is a domaine with which all serious Burgundy lovers will want to acquaint themselves, and the wines come warmly recommended. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
