100% Sangiovese from hillside vineyards located at between 270-320 meters. The average age of the vines is 15 years old. La Gerla Rosso spends six monhts in tank, then one year in Slavonian oak (large casks of 50hl) and another six months in bottle before being released.
This wine is obtained from declassified Brunello, which nonetheless follows the strict production regulations, shows characteristics of freshness and typical aromas of quality young wines, fruity and vinous notes blend with more complex autumn leaves and violet.
Pairs well with pasta, grilled pork and red meat.
“The La Gerla estate - once part of Biondi Santi, the legendary winery credited with the creation of Brunello - produces both Brunello and this fresh, vibrant Rosso, marked by a lively acidity and crisp red fruit.”
Alberto Passeri, general manager and winemaker of Fattoria La Gerla, noted that a short aging period means a livelier wine - a key attribute of a good Rosso. “Rosso has to be fruit forward,” Passeri said. He finds the term “baby Brunello” rather condescending. “For me and for La Gerla, the Rosso di Montalcino has always been considered an important wine,” he said.
An intoxicating mix of wild black cherry, lavender, and Mediterranean herbs are packed into the 2021 Rosso Di Montalcino. Medium to full-bodied, it has ample fruit without being heavy, with ripe blackberry, floral perfume, and a soft, stony texture. This incredible entry wine is a lens into the estate style at a great value. Drink 2023-2027.
