This “Xisto Ilimitado” is Luis Seabra's Portuguese answer to village-level White Burgundy.
Luis Seabra has become Portuguese wine celebrity and is a mentor to many wineries and vintners. A former winemaker at Nieeport, he has focused his winemaking on the distinct soil types in the Douro valley, and this latest project shows the breadth of style that is achievable in that region. Among Seabra’s innovations was simply harvesting white wine grapes earlier, to preserve acidity and avoid elevated alcohol and glycerol levels. The “Xisto Ilimitado” is made from the native grapes of 70% Rabigato, remaining balance field blend of 10% Codega, 10% Gouveio and 10% Viosinho Dozelino Branco. are fermented 90% in used oak barrels and 10% in stainless steel, then aged in the same mix of vessels for one year on lees.
Winemaker Notes:
Bright straw yellow. On the nose, stone and orchard fruit abound, with flinty wet stone and white pepper laid over the dominant aromatics. On the palate, impressively bright and mineral driven, with a great balance between power and lift. Lemon, green apple, bosc pear flavors comingle with a touch of floral tone and slate minerals. Juicy and mineral-driven all at once.
A creamy white enlivened by plump juiciness and subtle, salty tang, this offers flavors of baked apple, orange peel and Marcona almond. Rabigato, Gouveio, Côdega and Viosinho. Drink now. 1,850 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. Alison Napjus, 6/5/2023.
