This Pinot Grigio will make you reconsider everything you think you know about Italy’s most famous white wine. This is Alto Adige’s first and so far, only DOC Riserva Pinot Grigio. The unique barrel-fermented Giatl Pinot Grigio was fermented first in French oak barriques and casks, then aged in oak for a year, followed by six months in stainless steel on the lees; and then rested after botteling for six more months.

The winery was founded in 1928 by wine negociant Peter Zemmer, who was the great uncle of the current Peter Zemmer, who is in charge today. In a wine region typified by tiny family holdings dominated by cooperatives, Peter Zemmer is a relatively large family winery, making 400,000 bottles per year. About 90% of the grapes come from vineyards owned by the estate. The remaining 10% are from 100 longstanding contract growers. The estate includes several different sites with contrasting altitudes, aspects, and soils.

The ten-hectare “cru” vineyard of Giatl, which, in the local dialect, means “little property” is ideally suitable for Pinot Grigio. Giatl, while on flat land at only 200m altitudes, is a sun-trap. Hence summer days can be some of the hottest in Italy. The Ora wind blows northwards from Lake Garda from early afternoon, mitigating the heat and drying the grapes after rainfall. At night, the cooling winds blow south from the Dolomites. These winds help long and slow grape ripening, preserving acidity and aroma.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

This one's all peaches and cream, as they say in the South. The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Riserva Giatl brings big soft intensity and lots of plush fruit. Peach, poached pear and passion fruit explode from the bouquet in an expression that affords lots of nice richness. The oak fermentation at nearly room temperature results here in a soft and integrated white to enjoy with a shrimp étouffée. Some 10,000 bottles were made. Monica Larner MW, 9/16/2021.

Wine Spectator: 91 Points

An enticing white, with wafting hints of jasmine and exotic spice, aromatics which accent the palate's creamed apple, lemon meringue pie and spun honey notes. Fresh and balanced by lightly mouthwatering acidity throughout, showing hints of stony mineral on the finish. Drink now through 2026. 350 cases made, 100 cases imported. Alison Napjus, 12/15/2021.
