This vintage has all of the depth and richness that you expect from a To Kalon Cabernet, but with much more refined tannins and a slight rosewater, tobacco edge, that is not normally there. In addition, the lift and freshness of the added Cab Franc, makes this wine extremely food friendly.
Winery notes:
Beckstoffer To Kalon continues to receive worldwide accolades, and has been said to be the most famous vineyard in Napa Valley. The site is set along a gentle slope on the western foothills of the Oakville Appellation. For the last decade, we have worked with six blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and two blocks of Cabernet Franc. Each vintage tells a different story, and the best wines can either be single blocks or blends of blocks. Matured in 100% Darnajou small French oak barrels for twenty months and bottled without fining or filtration. The 2019 To Kalon Cabernet is truly unlike any other To Kalon we have made in 20 years. This years wine includes the largest percentage of Cabernet Franc that we have ever had in a To Kalon and wow what that did! This years version has all of the depth and richness that you expect from a To Kalon Cabernet but with much more refined tannins and a slight rosewater, tobacco edge that is not normally there. In addition the lift and freshness that the addition of the Franc added makes this perhaps the most food friendly To Kalon we have ever made. As great as past To Kalons have been it is very hard to single this out as the best but in a few years I would not be surprised to see it there.
In these great, historic vineyards, the total is much more than the sum of the parts . . . People like [TOR winemaker Jeff Ames] seem to do the best job with this fruit.” ANDY BECKSTOFFER

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is outrageously beautiful. Dark and dense to the core, the 2019 is an explosive wine endowed with remarkable depth. Crème de cassis, lavender, graphite ad inky blue fruit saturate the palate as this sumptuous, dazzling Cabernet captivates all the senses. The 2019 is a wine of tremendous energy and class. This is the first vintage in which the team felt the Pure Magic lots worked best in the To Kalon wine. Tasting this barrel sample, it's hard to argue with that choice. The 2019 is seriously off the charts. Antonio Galloni, 12/2020.
I was absolutely blown away by the wines I tasted this year from Tor Kenward and winemaker Jeff Ames. If I had to name the winery that has improved the most over the last decade, it would surely be Tor. Ten years ago, the wines were good, but rarely truly exciting. Since then, Kenward has dramatically upped his game. Fruit sources are now much higher in quality and winemaking is state of the art. The results are obvious. Wine after wine, I was so impressed with what I tasted, especially the 2018 and 2019s Cabernet-based wines.
For the first time, Tor's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon includes a fair whack of Cabernet Franc (14%), which winemaker Jeff Ames co-fermented with a portion of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Perhaps that is the source of the wine's delicate herbal shadings, adding complexity and freshness to the black cherry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and long, this is really super stuff, with tea-like notes emerging on the finish and lingering silky-dusty tannins. Joe Czerwinski, 5/2022.
A vineyard that rarely holds things close to its vest, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard just about jumps from the glass with its brilliant perfume of red, blue, and black fruits as well as flowery incense, Asian spices, tapenade, and iron-like aromas and flavors. One of the more structured, tannic wines in the lineup, it's medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, and serious length on the finish. As with most 2019s, there's plenty of early appeal, yet smart money will give these 3-5 years. 12/2021.
Blueberry, dark chocolate, sandalwood and cedar. Crushed stone, too. Full-bodied with depth of fruit and richness. The tannins are chewy and focused. A leaner yet rich palate that gives a special interpretation of To Kalon. Drink after 2024. 1/2022.
