Wente Description

Winemaker Notes:
This lush Chardonnay has plenty of character and is loaded with perfectly ripened apples, caramelized pineapple, and toasted brioche, which team together to form the foundation of this deep and delightfully expressive vineyard selection. The optimally ripened fruit is complimented by a tasteful measure of slightly creamy oak that hints at notes of crème Brule, along with a dollop of buttery richness that lasts well into the lengthy finish. The mouthfeel is slightly viscous and supple on entry but manages to maintain youthful energy thanks to some carefully integrated supporting acidity that assures that the wine is as carefully balanced as it is wonderfully rich.

The Wentes have been farming in the cool Monterey County sub-AVA of Arroyo Seco since the 1960s. Offering a longer growing season than Livermore Valley, this area has deep volcanic soils that produce naturally richer fruit. Barrel-aged in French oak and 10% stainless steel–fermented, this wine shows opulent aromas of butterscotch and white pear that lead to a silky entry. Honeysuckle and ripe pineapple strap in a minerality that entwines with an innate creaminess. A classic.

C.H. Wente came to America in the late 1800s from Hamburg Germany, learned to make wine from a German by the name of Charles Krug in the Napa Valley, and in 1883 established his first 47-acre Estate and Winery. He chose the Livermore Valley as it was famed for its excellent soils and climate. Wente Vineyards is America’s oldest, continuously-operated family-owned winery; with the involvement of Christine, Jordan, Karl, and Niki, the fifth generation takes the helm. From their beginnings in the Livermore Valley, the Wentes went on to pioneer the Arroyo Seco, Monterey winegrowing region. This single-vineyard wine from the Arroyo Seco is the winery’s signature Chardonnay from estate-grown grapes; the Wentes have been growing Chardonnay here since the 1960s. This is a big, buttery Chardonnay with flavors of almond butter, lemon peel, and mango and notes of cardamom and vanilla on the finish.

Wente Vineyards has been farming sustainably since its founding in 1883. Throughout its history, Wente Vineyards has been a leader in sustainable practices helping implement the non-profit trade organization’s Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices.

Wente Vineyards is proudly a certified sustainable vineyard and winery from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Less than ten percent of wineries hold both the vineyard and winery certifications. The certification is verified annually by a third party on over sixty vineyards and forty-one winery prerequisites. Year after year, Wente Vineyards must demonstrate continuous improvements and implement action plans for the following year’s initiatives.

James Suckling: 91 Points

A toasty, full-bodied wine in the tradition of reserve-style chardonnays. Shows ample oak spice, charred baguette, butter and baked apple flavors on a smooth, creamy texture, yet with a good nip of lemon zest acidity to keep it balanced.
